Kelly’s beach in Port Alfred boasts a blue flag status, this means that it has been nominated as one of the best beaches in South Africa. Other activities, that visitors or permanent residents for that matter, can enjoy are sailing, canoeing, scuba diving, deep see fishing, on-shore fishing and river-side fishing. With great hiking and horse trails and lush green golf courses, one is sure to find Port Alfred a superb holiday destination jam-packed with endless activities to be enjoyed.

The Very Beginning.

Lord Charles Somerset moved British Colonies into this area back in the early 1820’s. It was then that this quaint little town was established as a buffer, between the Western Cape and the Ama Xhosa. Port Alfred was originally called Port Kowie – named after the Kowie river which runs through the town. Later, Prince Albert visited the town (Queen Victoria’s son) and after that, the town was renamed Port Alfred, in his honour.
