There are a number of buildings and monuments here that are worth a visit. Like a lot of other towns in the Eastern Cape, Middelburg is also steeped in history – with buildings that each have their own story to tell. A lot of fossil life has been discovered here and there is also evidence of the first known human inhabitants, in the form of San Rock Paintings.
The area is well known for its vast herbal plant life that grows in the fields, wild. Some interesting places to visit here are the Grootfontein Agricultural Institute and the Middelburg Cultural History Museum. Activities in the area include Quad biking, hiking trails, white water rafting, horse riding, archery, game viewing as well as clay pigeon shooting.
The local restuarants boast excellent quisine, with Karoo lamb being a local delicacy!
This town is halfway between Johannesberg and Cape Town. The R56 provides the shortest route between the KwaZulu Natal Province and the Western Cape, passing throught he Eastern Cape too. This route starts at Middelburg and carries on until Kokstad.
There is a variety of good quility accommodation available here such as Guesthouses, Bed and Breakfasts, Caravan sites – for those on a tight budget as well as self-catering units.
