King Williams Town lies approximately 50 km west of East London, and is considered one of the most interesting towns in the Eastern Cape Regions to visit. Much of the historical stone buildings and beautiful archeology dates back to the time of the Frontier Wars.

There are a number of interesting museums to visit in the area, one being the Amathole Museum which houses the biggest collection of mammals in Africa. Both Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki are from this area and interested tourists can visit the Nelson Mandela Museum. The Nelson Mandela Route starts at King Williams Town and extends to Umtata.

The town itself is full of natural beauty, and it is for this reason that it’s worth a visit. Watersports and fishing can be enjoyed at the Maden and Rooikrans Dams and it serves a great base for those brave enough to attempt the Amatola Hiking Trail (100km long) being only 22 km from its start.

Back in the early 1900’s a hippo decided to ‘take a walk’ and ended up trekking for over 1500 km across KwaZulu Natal all the way down to the Eastern Cape. This hippo legend was named Huberta (Forest Gump would have suited him fine too!). One of the museums of this quite little town is home to Huberta’s body.
