Graaff-Reinet is the forth oldest town in South Africa with beautiful and well preserved architectural history. It is situated 750 meters above the sea and is built on the banks of the Sunday’s River. Surrounded by Camdeboo National Park this town offers many tourist attractions for the interested traveler.

The Valley of Desolation is a must-see as it is indeed a phenomenal spectacle. Other tourist attractions include, Kruit House (‘huis’), Angel Square, Old Library Museum, Stretch’s Court, the John Rupert Theatre, the Dutch Reformed Church, Graaff-Reinet Pharmacy, the Old Residency, Obesa Cacti & Succulents, and the Reinet House.

There are more national monuments in this town alone, than any other in the whole of South Africa. If history and culture are your thing, you have found the right destination!

The Very Beginning:

Named after Cornelis Jacob van de Graaf and his wife Cornelia Reynet, this town was used as a stopover for all passing travelers.

In 1865, after the arrival of the railway, there were 64 recognised ‘outspans’. Graaff-Reinet became a major trading centre and the ‘outspans’ were essential in order to maintain the ox-wagon transport system providing a place to feed, water and rest the oxen. For the convenience of the travelers, many Inns were built, and today there is still a vast selection of accommodation venues available to suit your needs.
